Financial Research Executive Briefing: EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia Research for the Financial Industry 29 January, 2013 - Hong Kong
Part of EDHEC Business School, a leading not-for-profit educational organisation, and established in 2001, EDHEC-Risk Institute has become the premier centre for financial research and its applications. EDHEC-Risk Institute’s strategy is part of a new approach to academic research which considers that scientific excellence and academic publications are a necessary but insufficient starting point for qualifying research undertakings. Usefulness for the industry and the capacity to change professional practices are for EDHEC-Risk Institute the ultimate goal of the research conducted. To carry through this ambitious strategy successfully, EDHEC-Risk Institute’s team of 90 permanent professors, engineers and support staff implements six research programmes and fifteen research chairs and strategic research projects focusing on asset allocation and risk management in the traditional and alternative investment universes.

Since 2010, EDHEC-Risk Institute has been developing its activities in Asia. This development has led it to produce numerous research publications that are particularly relevant for financial sector firms in the region. As such, EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia has affirmed its expertise in long-term investment (sovereign wealth fund management, the Asian silver market, infrastructure investment, use of structured products by long-term Asian investors, etc.) and also in market areas such as high frequency trading, measuring volatility in Asia or the shortcomings of the main Asian stock market indices.

EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia is also very active in the area of training, with the creation of an Asian chapter of its PhD in Finance programme, which has been open to professionals since 2011. This training programme, which has been developed in collaboration with academics from the best universities in the world (Princeton, Wharton, Oxford, Chicago, CalTech, etc.), constitutes one of the most important executive education initiatives in the region. The concern to help professional practices in the region evolve has led EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia to implement an ambitious policy to distribute its research and expertise by organising seminars and conferences in more than 12 economic capitals in the region for more than 1,500 asset managers, institutional investors, private wealth managers and investment bankers. In total, more than 380,000 investment professionals in Asia receive EDHEC-Risk Institute’s research publications.

In 2013, EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia will go one step further by making new research, and especially applications, available to the whole of the financial community, notably in the area of equity investment by setting up a smart beta platform.
