Risk Management "Diversification matters...but not for risk control" seminar 1 December 2010 - Frankfurt, Germany
The design of optimal investment offerings that truly take into account investors’ specific constraints and objectives draws simultaneously on the benefits of the three competing approaches to risk management—risk diversification, risk hedging, and risk insurance—each of which has hitherto remained largely untapped as a source of added value for the investment management industry. Moreover, blending active management with risk control, new dynamic asset allocation techniques offer manifold welfare-enhancing applications in asset-only and asset-liability management.

Diversification, while perfectly appropriate as a device that allows investors to extract risk premia out of performance-seeking assets, will not allow investors to obtain protection against 2008-like events. Indeed, diversification is often blamed for failing when investors most need it, that is in times of market downturns. One should recognise that diversification is simply not the appropriate tool when it comes to protecting long-term liability needs (need for hedging) in the presence of short-term performance constraints (need for insurance).

At a special evening presentation organised in Frankfurt, Felix Goltz, Head of Applied Research at EDHEC-Risk Institute, will review both the benefits and limits of diversification from a post-crisis perspective and will clarify the role of diversification when used in conjunction with complementary risk management techniques.
