Alternative Investments Hedge Funds: Theories and Practices 16th September, 2004 - Lugano, Switzerland

A conference organised by the BSI Gamma Foundation

As reported recently by The Economist, investments in hedge funds amounted to a mere $50 billion in 1990, but are close to a trillion dollars today. This spectacular increase in investments in hedge funds raises numerous questions:

  • What do hedge funds do?
  • Do they truly outperform markets on average or are their returns and risks simply mismeasured?
  • Will the growth of hedge funds kill off the abnormal performance of hedge funds?
  • Are hedge funds doing the equivalent of selling earthquake insurance - an activity that is profitable almost all the time, but that makes large offsetting losses when there is an earthquake?
  • Do we really know what individual hedge funds are doing?
  • Should transparency of hedge funds be improved?
To improve our understanding of hedge funds, the BSI Gamma Foundation is organizing a conference where leading participants in the hedge fund industry will help make progress in answering these questions.

François-Serge Lhabitant, Associate Professor of Finance at Edhec Business School, will be speaking on Hedge Fund Diversification at the event.
