Business Analysis Edhec European Asset Management Practices Survey Luxembourg, 3rd December, 2003 With the support of EuroPerformance and Misys Asset Management Systems, Edhec has conducted a major survey into the practices of the leading 400 European asset management companies.

The Edhec European Asset Management Practices study was based on three questionnaires:
  • investment process and strategy
  • measuring and monitoring risk
  • organisation and information systems
The study generated responses from 60 European asset management companies, representing a total volume of 6,211.62 billion euros of assets under management.

From this representative sample, Edhec has not only drawn up comparisons between the practices of asset management industry players from the different European countries, but also studied the application of the research results to portfolio management within the investment and risk management processes of businesses.

The survey results reveal that in spite of their extensive knowledge of the concepts involved in research into portfolio management and the progress made, the major European asset managers were either not implementing them or not adopting them rapidly as part of their investment management process. Thus, only 50% of asset management companies carry out a systematic analysis of the extreme risks of the portfolios managed. Furthermore, whilst the multi-factor approach is commonly used in the field of risk control, it is rarely used for measuring managers' alphas. In this area, widely criticised methods such as the Sharpe ratio or peer groups are dominant.

The presentation of the Edhec European Asset Management Practices Survey will provide the opportunity to explain the many results in detail and to discuss them with the professionals present.
