Alternative Investments
"Gestion Alternative : Origine, Stratégies, Performances"

Authors: François-Serge Lhabitant
Editions: Dunod
Pages: 320 pages
Date: 2004
The European alternative investment market is developing rapidly. This publication provides an introduction to the universe of alternative investment, and more specifically to that of alternative funds (or "hedge funds"). The latter are investment funds that allow leverage positions and short selling, investment in derivative instruments and the exploitation of all opportunities available on the market. They have grown by 20% over the last ten years and, despite increasing interest from a large number of investors in this new asset class due to its high performance, numerous questions still exist. The aim of this book is to answer these questions in a didactical, thematic and progressive way, thereby lifting the veil on a side of private wealth management that remains mysterious and opaque.

The book covers:

  • Characteristics of hedge funds
  • Historical perspective
  • Regulatory perspective
  • Classification of investment funds and styles
  • Examples of large funds and investment managers
  • Why invest in hedge funds?
  • How to analyse and select hedge funds?
  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of hedge funds
  • Operational analysis
  • Building a hedge fund portfolio: direct portfolios, funds of funds, guaranteed capital products
  • How to mix alternative and traditional investment?
  • Myths and limits of hedge funds
