EDHEC-Risk Institute welcomes five distinguished new members to its international advisory board

EDHEC-Risk Institute is pleased to announce that five new members have joined its international advisory board, which brings together distinguished scholars, representatives of regulatory bodies as well as senior executives from business partners and other leading institutions.

The role of the international advisory board is to validate the relevance and goals of the research programme proposals presented by the institute’s management and to evaluate research outcomes with respect to their potential impact on industry practices.

The 48 members of the board also advise on the objectives and contents of projects deriving from the expertise of the institute, thereby ensuring that graduate and executive programmes remain at the forefront of developments in the marketplace.

The five new members are as follows:

  • Mr Carl S. Bang, Chief Investment Officer, Qatar Foundation Endowment (QFE)
  • Mr James Barber, Chief Investment Officer of Equities, Russell Investments
  • Mr Laurent Degabriel, Head of Investment and Reporting Division, European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA)
  • Ms Jacqueline Loh, Deputy Managing Director, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)
  • Mr Adriaan Ryder, Chief Investment Officer, QIC


About the New Members


Mr Carl S. Bang, Chief Investment Officer, Qatar Foundation Endowment (QFE)

Carl S. Bang is the Chief Investment Officer of Qatar Foundation Endowment (QFE), a recently established long-term global investor with a broad mandate to make direct and managed investments. Mr. Bang joined the organisation in early 2011 and he has played a key role in establishing QFE as one of the largest endowment funds globally.

Prior to joining QFE, he served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) - Paris, France, managing European and Middle Eastern client assets. Preceding this role, he held the position of President, Senior Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer for SSGA, Canada, during a time of rapid business growth and new investment strategy expansion. His experience includes taking part in establishing Norges Bank Investment Management: the group managing the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Mr. Bang graduated with an honour’s Bachelor degree in Finance from the University of Windsor; holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto, Canada, where he was awarded the Schulich Scholarship for academic excellence and entrepreneurship.

He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and has served as head of the CFA curriculum committee responsible for portfolio management, and co-chair of the CFA institute professional development program. He has held directorships for the CFA advisory board, the Financial Research Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance, CIRANO (a financial market think-tank) and State Street Trust Canada.



Mr James Barber, Chief Investment Officer of Equities, Russell Investments

James Barber is Chief Investment Officer of equities for Russell Investments where he is accountable for the performance of the equity funds, the quality of the investment content and investment manager recommendations within his asset class globally. James is located in Russell’s head office in Seattle. He is a member of Russell’s investment strategy committee. James was named to this role in September 2012.

Prior to this role, James led the European and UK Equity Portfolio Management team. Based in London, he was responsible for all aspects of fund management including the fund construction and manager selection process as well as direct investment strategies and the continuous monitoring of these funds.

Prior to working at Russell Investments, James was senior portfolio manager for U.K. and European equities at SEI Investments. He was responsible for portfolio management and research of all U.K. and European strategies and was part of SEI’s global equity management committee and European Management Committee.

James originally joined SEI in the U.S. in 1999 where he worked as a senior investment analyst for the global asset allocation team before moving to London in 2003. Prior to joining SEI, James worked for KPMG in South Africa for four years before completing his MBA.



Mr Laurent Degabriel, Head of Investment and Reporting Division, European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA)

Laurent Degabriel joined the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) in 2011 after acting for two years as a financial expert in the Services of the European Commission, DG Internal Market, in Brussels, where he was working on issues such as short selling or MIFID.

Prior to joining the Commission he worked for many years in the financial services industry in product development, commercial relationships and investors relations in London, Paris and Hong Kong.

Laurent Degabriel has a degree from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and a MBA from the London Business School.



Ms Jacqueline Loh, Deputy Managing Director, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)

Ms Jacqueline Loh Wai Yin was appointed Deputy Managing Director overseeing the MAS’ Monetary Policy and Investment, as well as the Development and International Group, with effect from 1 September 2013.

Jacqueline joined the MAS in 1987. In MAS, Jacqueline had experience in several functions, including MAS’ Finance, Information Technology and Risk Group from 1 April 2010 to 31 January 2012. Prior to her current appointment, Jacqueline was Assistant Managing Director, in charge of the Prudential Policy, Macro-Surveillance and Specialist Risk Supervision Group. Between 1990 and 1994, Jacqueline worked in MAS’ New York Office.

Jacqueline graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington in 1986. She is a Member of the Institute of Banking & Finance and SMU’s Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics Advisory Board.

Jacqueline was awarded the Public Administration (Silver) Medal in August 2010.



Mr Adriaan Ryder, Chief Investment Officer, QIC

Adriaan develops and oversees market leading investment management strategies for QIC's multi-asset clients.

Adriaan has extensive experience in researching and developing investment strategies and solutions for institutional clients, from both asset and liability perspectives, as well as analysing and making recommendations for mergers and acquisitions.

Adriaan holds an Honours degree in Actuarial Science and is a member of several professional associations. His career has spanned across a number of countries with senior leadership roles in the asset management and financial services sectors. Adriaan also holds directorships on many pension and endowment manager investment boards for both domestic and international companies.
