EDHEC professor Noël Amenc appointed to ESMA’s Consultative Working Group for Financial Innovation

Noël Amenc,
Professor of Finance at EDHEC Business School,
Director of EDHEC-Risk Institute

We are honoured to announce that Noël Amenc, Professor of Finance at EDHEC Business School and Director of EDHEC-Risk Institute, has been invited to join industry stakeholders on the European Securities and Markets Authority's (ESMA's) Consultative Working Group for Financial Innovation, alongside eighteen fellow members.

The Consultative Working Group was established by ESMA in order to advise and provide expertise to its Financial Innovation Standing Committee in the field of financial innovation and related market and product developments that impact both retail and institutional investors.

The Financial Innovation Standing Committee itself was created to assist ESMA in fulfilling its tasks and responsibilities relating to investor protection. Its fundamental aim is to achieve a co-ordinated approach to the regulatory and supervisory treatment of new or innovative financial activities by facilitating the efficient co-ordination of policy-making work in the area of financial innovation within ESMA.

The main objectives of the Consultative Working Group are to provide the Standing Committee with market intelligence on emerging financial innovations that will improve its ability to pro-actively identify potentially harmful trends within the financial services market; help define metrics to identify and in turn analyse products, services or processes that may pose a threat to investors and/or financial stability; and provide insight to areas of concern relative to the introduction of newly-created or evolving products, as well as the development of a financial product’s distribution to a wider investor base.

Noël Amenc has conducted active research in the fields of quantitative equity management, portfolio performance analysis, and active asset allocation, resulting in numerous academic and practitioner articles and books. He sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Portfolio Management and serves as associate editor of the Journal of Alternative Investments and the Journal of Index Investing. In addition to his recent appointment to the Consultative Working Group of the European Securities and Markets Authority Financial Innovation Standing Committee, he is also a member of the Scientific Board of the French Financial Market Authority (AMF), and the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s Finance Research Council. He co-heads EDHEC-Risk Institute’s research on the regulation of investment management. Professor Amenc holds a master’s in economics and a PhD in finance.
