Towards Better Financial and Economic Governance

Florencio Lopez de Silanes, Professor of Finance and Law at EDHEC Business School, and Head of the Fund Governance Research Programme at EDHEC-Risk Institute, recently participated in the Rencontres Economiques (Economic Forum) organised by the Cercle des Economistes in Aix-en-Provence in France on July 7, 2012, where he was invited to take part in the panel on the subject of "The Return to a Society of Law in a Dynamic World", alongside Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court, Ronny Abraham from the International Court of Justice, Pietro Grasso, Director of the National Antimafia Program of Italy, Ivailo Kaffen from the European Parliament, and Shunji Yanai of the Tribunal of Ocean Waters. The Cercle des Economistes holds an annual seminar, the Aix-en-Provence Economic Forum, on a current economic topic. The purpose of the seminar is to hear the viewpoints of specialists selected for their expertise by a scientific committee and to bring recommendations deemed essential by the participants to the attention of the public and governments.

Professor Lopez de Silanes will also be participating in the following forthcoming conferences:

  • US National Bureau of Economic Research Summer Program on Political Economy in Boston in July 2012, where he will be presenting the paper, "Letter Grading Government Efficiency", co-authored with Alberto Chong, Rafael La Porta and Andrei Shleifer. The paper proposes one objective indicator of government efficiency, and uses it to shed light on two broad theories of the quality of government. The indicator describes the performance of the mail system in accomplishing a simple task: returning an incorrectly addressed international letter.

  • Conference on Economic European Integration in Helsinki on November 26-27, 2012, organised by the Bank of Finland and the Austrian Central Bank, where Professor Lopez de Silanes will be delivering the keynote speech. The theme of this year's conference, which is aimed at European Central Bankers, is "Achieving Balanced Growth in the CESEE Countries".

Professor Lopez de Silanes' research interests and main publications fall in the areas of International Corporate Finance and Financial Markets, Legal Reform and Privatization. He has been an advisor on these topics to several governments, international institutions and corporations. Some of his research shows the relevance of law and institutions for the functioning of markets and their development. He has many publications in top finance and economics journals and has recently published two books on Investor Protection and the Benefits of Privatization in Latin America. Among other distinctions, he received Harvard's Wells Prize for the Best Dissertation in Economics (1995), the Brattle Prize for distinguished paper in the Journal of Finance of the American Finance Association (1999), and the Jensen Prize for the best papers published in the Journal of Financial Economics in the Areas of Corporate Finance and Organizations (2000). Professor Lopez de Silanes is one of the top three most cited researchers in the world in economics and business in the last 10 years, according to the Essential Science Indicators. Before coming to France, he was also a professor at the universities of Harvard, Yale, Amsterdam, and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris.
