Announcement of EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia in Singapore, London and Paris

The launch of EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia was announced at a series of events at the end of April and the beginning of May in Singapore, London and Paris. In front of several hundred guests, EDHEC-Risk Institute drew on its research results to make special presentations on the added-value of risk management in asset management, the future of private wealth management and state-of-the-art equity indices and benchmarks.

Starting with an exclusive introductory event at the Fullerton Hotel Singapore on April 27, with the participation of Mr Ng Nam Sin, Assistant Managing Director, Development Group, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Mr Boon Chye Loh, Managing Director, Head of Global Markets, Asia, Deutsche Bank and Chairman, Singapore Foreign Exchange Market Committee, EDHEC-Risk Institute ran a series of seminars to tie in with the announcement of the launch of EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia.

At a presentation at the Raffles Hotel on April 28 entitled "Why Risk Management Adds Value in Asset Management," Professor Lionel Martellini, Scientific Director of EDHEC-Risk Institute, showed that the traditional asset management approaches based on the diversification of risks and relatively static forms of asset allocation were not optimal and did not allow efficient risk management to be implemented. According to Professor Martellini, the challenge facing institutional investors and asset managers is to shift from a portfolio management logic to a risk management logic.

Professor Martellini continued to draw on EDHEC-Risk's research results at two presentations on April 29, one on the future of private wealth management, at which he explained that the success or failure of the satisfaction of the client’s long-term objectives is fundamentally dependent on an asset-liability management exercise that aims to determine the proper strategic inter-classes allocation as a function of the client’s specific objectives and constraints (this research is part of the Ortec Finance research chair at EDHEC-Risk Institute), and a second on equity indices and benchmarks, where Professor Martellini drew a distinction between indices and benchmarks, addressing the key issue of the optimal use of indices and benchmarks in institutional investment, and explained the importance of a good index in asset management and asset-liability management. By reviewing the limitations of traditional indices, Professor Martellini also presented the improved "efficient" equity indices designed by the research team at EDHEC Risk Institute and the FTSE EDHEC-Risk Efficient Index Series.

At an additional academic seminar on April 29, René Garcia, Academic Director of the EDHEC Risk Institute PhD in Finance and Professor of Finance at EDHEC Business School and Federico Bandi, Affiliate Professor at EDHEC Risk Institute and Professor of Economics and Finance at The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, presented the state of academic research on long-term asset pricing and portfolio management.

At an exclusive seminar in London on May 11, Olivier Oger, President of EDHEC Business School, underlined the importance of the expansion of EDHEC-Risk Institute within the school's international strategy; His Excellency Michael Teo, High Commissioner for the Republic of Singapore to the United Kingdom and Ireland, placed EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia in the context of Singapore’s development strategy for the finance industry; and Noël Amenc, Director of EDHEC-Risk Institute, and Frédéric Ducoulombier, Director of EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia, presented the research centre's development strategy and research programmes.

At the George V Hotel in Paris on May 18, Olivier Oger, Noël Amenc and Frédéric Ducoulombier were joined by His Excellency Burhan Gafoor, the Republic of Singapore's Ambassador to France. Noël Amenc took this opportunity to present his vision of the future of the investment management industry.

To be launched in September 2010 in Singapore, EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia will serve as a platform for generating and disseminating academic insights into investment management issues of global importance and particular relevance for investors and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. With the support of the financial industry, EDHEC Risk Institute—Asia aims to become a leading academic institution fostering innovation and high professional standards in the Asia-Pacific investment industry and globally. One of its first initiatives in the field of executive education will be to offer two exclusive degree courses from Singapore: the EDHEC Risk Institute PhD in Finance and the new Executive MSc in Risk and Investment Management.
